AMIN NCR Rally at COMELEC

amin ncr rally (click for larger image) On August 2, 2007, members of Anak Mindanao Partylist in the National Capital Region trooped to the COMELEC national office in Intramuros to rally for the proclamation of AMIN as winner of the recently concluded National elections. The rallyists headed by AMIN National President Prof. Moy Edding demanded COMELEC to immediately proclaim AMIN. Almost two months after the national elections the COMELEC has not yet proclaimed AMIN even if it had already reached more than the required 2% threshold for a Partylist to win one seat in Congress.

amin ncr rally (click for larger image) The group numbering around a hundred came from different Muslim communities in Metro Manila and supported by a contingent from AMIN allied political organizations and Partylist. The group gathered in front of the main entrance of the Palacio del Gobernador where COMELEC holds office. A small unit of the Police barricaded the doors to prevent the rallyists from advancing. The group then just held a program right in front of the door step of the building. AMIN leaders and other speakers, including AKBAYAN Rep. Risa Hontiveros-Baraquel, took turns in lambasting COMELEC for delaying AMIN's proclamation.

By sheer timing, COMELEC Chairman Abalos arrived and got off from his car right in the middle of the rallyists. The rallyist surged to him and shoved their placards in front of his face. Obviously annoyed and upset by being put on the spot, Chairman Abalos invited AMIN leaders and some supporters to his office to discuss the issue.

PRESS STATEMENT on the HUMAN SECURITY ACT (or ANTI-TERRORISM BILL)
Febuary 21, 2007

Now that the dreaded “Anti-terrorism Bill” has been approved, I maintain my assertion that such law will primarily affect the Muslims in the country, considering that even before its passage into law, there is great number of reported cases of torture and harassment against Muslims who are allegedly suspected terrorists. Thus, I stand still with my objection against the Anti-Terrorism Act, even in the guise of being called as the “Human Security Act of 2007”.

On the Ramadan Bombings
A party-list representative from Mindanao on Wednesday condemned in the strongest possible terms Tuesday's twin bombings in North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat which occurred during the holy month of Ramadan as he called on the authorities and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to conduct separate and thorough investigations.

Anak Mindanao (AMIN) Party-List Rep.  Mujiv Hataman also asked authorities to stop issuing concluding and premature statements without the benefit of a comprehensive and exhaustive probe in order not to complicate the stalled peace talks between the government and the MILF.
