After 40 Years, a marker commemorating Jabidah Massacre is now installed.
On March 18, 2008, Anak Mindanao (AMIN) Party List Representative Mujiv Hataman led a delegation of personalities, leaders and members coming from different organizations in the Philippines to the island of Corregidor. This Corregidor trip was part of the culmination of a week-long activity billed as Bangsamoro Week conducted jointly by the Office of AMIN Party List Representative to Congress, Rep. Mujiv S. Hataman, BANGSA, Anak Mindanao (AMIN) - NCR Chapter, Mindanaw Forum, Inc., Moro Human Rights Center and Pinay Kilos (PinK).
The main event of the Corregidor trip was the unveiling of a commemorative marker of the Jabidah Massacre by AMIN Rep. Mujiv Hataman and the lone survivor of Jabidah Massacre, Mr. Jibin Arula. The unveiling ceremony was attended by more than 200 people coming from different Muslim communities in Metro Manila, Moro organizations, the Press, the Mindanao Caravan for Peace and various Civil Society organizations coming from Metro Manila.
The installation of a commemorative marker for the Jabidah Massacre and the return of the lone survivor, Mr. Jibin Arula, to Corregidor Island after 40 years, were two historical firsts.
The commemorative marker was the brainchild of Rep. Mujiv Hataman. Being himself an activist of the Bangsamoro struggle for self-determination, Rep. Hataman, thought that it would be fitting that a symbol that would remind us of the injustices committed against the Bangsamoro must be installed in the very place where such atrocities happened. Hence, a marker commemorating Jabidah Massacre was installed in the very spot where the horrendous incident took place on the island of Corregidor.
The participation of Mr. Jibin Arula to this event was made possible by the Mindanao Peoples Caucus who led the Mindanao Caravan for Peace that traveled from Mindanao to Visayas and Luzon to campaign for the signing of the Peace Agreements between the GRP and the MILF. The caravan's final destination was Corregidor, in time for the commemoration of the Jabidah Massacre and the unveiling of the commemorative marker.
The Corregidor Foundation, Inc. (CFI) through its Executive Director, Lt.Col.Artemio Matibag, had chosen the very spot where the massacre happened as the place for the marker to be installed. The marker was placed on the wall of a ruins of a bunker at Kindley Airfield. This bunker is less than five meters to the ravine where Jibin Arula jumped and saved his life forty years ago.
The unveiling program was simple and brief. A panel of speakers where lined up led by Rep. Mujiv Hataman followed by the representatives of the Moro National Liberation Front, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, and the Mindanao Peace Caravan. The program was highlighted by the recollection and testimony of Mr. Jibin Arula about what really happened on that fateful day forty years ago.
After Kindley Airfield, the group went to the ruins of what was once a pre-war hospital building. It was on this place, according to Mr. Jibin Arula, that they were billeted for their training. From this place, they were taken into a tunnel going to the Kindley Airfield where they were mercilessly mowed down by gunfire.
Anak Mindanao (AMIN) Party List National President, Prof. Moy Edding sent a Message for the occasion on behalf of AMIN National Council, congratulating AMIN Rep. Mujiv Hataman and members of AMIN-NCR for a job well done. AMIN President Edding also expressed that this event is a milestone that will be remembered in the annals of the history of the Bangsamoro Struggle for self-determination.
The unveiling ceremony was a big success not only because of the installation of the marker. Rep. Hataman and the Corregidor Foundation, Inc had agreed that a Moro Garden for Peace will be constructed and developed on the location of the marker. A long term plan for the development of the spot will soon be put on the planning table. Also, Rep. Hataman is planning to conduct an all Mindanao / Moro Youth Peace Camp at Corregidor Island of which the Corregidor Foundation, Inc. readily expressed their support.
Jabidah Massacre truth remains elusive 40 years after By BEN R. ROSARIO
CORREGIDOR ISLAND — The truth behind the Jabidah Massacre that occurred 40 years ago has continued to elude the country’s Islamic leaders who believed that the bloodbath triggered Muslim secessionist rebellion in Mindanao.
On Tuesday, 40 years after the massacre of 34 young Muslim men who trained to become soldiers, Anak Mindanao party-list Rep. Mujiv Hataman sought a closure to the investigation to determine what really happened on March 18, 1968.
Hataman said the House of Representivates and Senate that initiated separate investigations into the incident that also stirred RP-Malaysia diplomatic relations failed to ferret out the truth into the carnage that was allegedly perpetrated by then President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
Jiben Arula, the lone survivor of the massacre, said he no longer wants another investigation that might open a new round of controversies.
Arula resurfaced to attend the ceremonies commemorating the bloodbath that occurred at the Kindley airstrip here.
Recounting his ordeal and showing reporters the scar of a bullet wound he sustained in his escape, Arula appeared not convinced that the truth will ever come out.
He said even the actual number of dead Muslims who were trained for "Operation: Merdeka," an alleged Philippine military plot to forcibly take over the contested Sabah territory, could not be ascertained.
Arula, Hataman, and other Muslim leaders led over 200 Filipinos in commemorating the martyrdom of Jabidah (beautiful lady) victims.
Among those present in the event were representatives from the Moro National Liberation Front, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the Mindanao Youth Caravan for Peace, and the Mindanao People’s Caucus.
Hataman urged government to take immediate steps in considering the approval of various peace proposals that have been presented in negotiating tables attended by the Moro National Liberation Front and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

CORREGIDOR ISLAND, Philippines -- The atrocity that happened here 40 years ago had long receded from Jibin Arula’s consciousness.
But when he set foot again on this island Tuesday to lead a caravan from Mindanao in commemorating the infamous "Jabidah Massacre," memories of how his fellow Muslim youth were killed by military officers came rushing back to him like it all happened just Tuesday.
Even the rough waves that punctuated the 30-minute boat ride from the shores of Mariveles, Bataan, to the island reminded him so much of the currents he fought against for four hours to swim to safety, Arula said.
Out of the roughly 60 Muslim youth summarily executed, only Arula, then 27, survived to tell the story -- which played a pivotal role in the war in Mindanao, giving birth to the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
Arula recalled he and the other recruits were brought to the island on January 3, 1968 for training on guerrilla tactics in preparation for "Operation Merdeka," then a top-secret plan of the Marcos administration to invade the east Malaysian state of Sabah which the Philippine claimed as part of its territory.
Their training officers fired at them before dawn on March 18, 1968 after an attempt by the trainees to air their grievances against the officers to Malacañang. Arula, who was hit by a bullet on the left knee, swam for his life across Manila Bay.
