All Out Peace in Mindanao

PRESS RELEASE
August 28, 2007

Calling for an all-out peace in Mindanao, party list Anak Mindanao, joined other Muslim organizations, in convening the Bangsamoro People's Solidarity or BANGSA. Aimed at countering the Arroyo administration's  three-year plan of an all-out war in the region to quell the terror group Abu Sayyaf, BANGSA counter-proposes a more comprehensive strategy in achieving lasting peace in Mindanao.

"In the decades of war that Mindanao has endured, by now we should have grasped the truth in the saying, 'In war there are no real victors…only victims' " lamented AMIN Representative Mujiv Hataman. "If War is the answer, this ill-named Mindanao problem should have ended decades ago. But no, it did not, and yet, we never changed plans."

BANGSA further questioned GMA's program on Health, Education, Livelihood and Progress, aptly termed as H.E.L.P., amidst the continuous military offensives. The group alleges that much as Gloria's HELP is needed in the region, it cannot be possibly implemented simultaneous to an on-going war. "Who will be her beneficiaries when people are displaced from their homes, children are not able to go to school, farms have become battle-fields? No one will be there to accept her HELP," Kashim Candido, BANGSA Spokesperson said.

The movement also presented what they argue is the only HELP this War will lead to - Human Rights violations, Economic displacement, Lives Lost, and Poverty. "And these, will only give more reasons to wage war, to rebel against the government. All those innocent children whose fathers died, who were denied education and the civilians left without livelihood, they only become vulnerable to recruitment by these terror groups," added Cong. Hataman.

Saying that majority of the Muslim populace are peace-loving and are against the Abu Sayyaf or any terror group, BANGSA, in their official statement claims that they are unjustly made to pay for the wrong done by terrorists who call themselves Muslims, and for the inefficiency of this government to crash these terrorists. "Either way, this is not our doing, neither is it our fault, yet, we unjustly pay for them, with our lives, our freedom, our future," the statement further read.

To show this protest against the on-going War and to call for lasting Peace, BANGSA initiated a simultaneous Prayer for Peace in mosques all over the country, during the Islamic weekly Friday Congregational Prayer, August 31, 2007. As of writing, Muslim groups from Metro Manila, Cotabato, Zamboanga City and Davao have manifested their participation in the said activity.
