HATAMAN AGAINST RICE HOARDERS IN MINDANAO
PRESS RELEASE
03 June 2008

Rice Crisis Anak Mindanao party-list Rep.  Mujiv Hataman on Tuesday urged the creation of a composite team from the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and National Food Authority (NFA) tasked to conduct extensive and aggressive regular inspection of warehouses not only in Luzon but also in the entire Visayas and Mindanao provinces.

Hataman made the call after the prices of “polished” rice soared to levels beyond reach of Mindanaoans—P41 to 52 per kilo.

The lawmaker who hails from Basilan believes that hoarders could be behind the soaring rice prices in Mindanao .

“A composite team must be formed to prevent conspiracy among inspectors of warehouses.  It should be done regularly all over the country.  Hindi dapat ningas-kugon at reactionary,” he said, adding that there is no logical reason for the sudden increase of rice prices but price speculation.

The lawmaker stressed the government must stop unscrupulous businessmen to feast at the height of hardships that the public is facing nowadays.

“We should prevent these corrupt traders from continuing their immoral act of looting the people’s very meager hard-earned money.  I don’t buy this situation because Mindanao is supposedly the food basket of the country,” he said.

He also asked concerned authorities to investigate some NFA personnel who might be in cahoots with some ruthless traders that resulted to the “unusual and anomalous” overpriced rice in Mindanao .

“We have to find out if some NFA personnel are playing fire with unscrupulous traders at the detriment of the people.  Why Mindanaoans are forced to buy more expensive commercial rice?” The lawmaker asked.

Hataman expressed deep concern over the problem which could seriously affect the peace and order situation should authorities fail to address it with dispatch.

“Unless authorities are there to immediately solve the problem, the peace and order, particularly in Mindanao is threatened seriously,” he said
