Message to ARMM Department of Education
Tuesday, 17 February 2004
MESSAGE

The Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao is one of the most diverse regions in the country. This diversity is reflected in the tribes located in ARMM and the number of dialects spoken. It is a big challenge, therefore, of educators, both from public and private schools, to overcome this diversity and create an environment wherein peace, unity, equality and understanding prevail.
I cannot help but agree that through sports competition, our long search for enduring peace will be achieved not only in ARMM but also in the entire country. This can be attained if the basis of the sports competition is not all about winning at all costs but on creating respect between participants, trainers, coaches; establishing solidarity, and stimulating venues for dialogue free of biases, hatred and stereotyped views.

A positive output of sports competition like this is the production of quality athletes from ARMM which will pose a serious challenge to the dominance of athletes from highly urbanized cities. Production of quality athletes who will help educate our brothers and sisters from Luzon, Visayas and the rest of Mindanao about our cultural diversity, our efforts of achieving peace, and progress.

Thus, I challenge the athletes, our sports officials and educators to help make true this year’s sports’ theme.

HON. MUJIV S. HATAMAN
