Muslim Summit on Discrimination |
The Office of Representative Mujiv S. Hataman, Anak-Mindanao Party List Representative, spearheaded the holding of the Muslim Summit on Discrimination and Human Rights at the Ramon Mitra Building, House of Representatives. The Summit aims to secure and understand respect for the dignity of the human person based on the international human rights standards; adopts national and local measures, including formulation of legislative agenda, teaching, education and information, in order to secure effective recognition and observance of the principle of non-discrimination; and the formation of mechanisms to secure adequate development or protection of individuals and people toward the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms.
According to Representative Hataman, the Summit was formulated to address the growing trend of Muslim discrimination in the country. He cited the incident involving the revocation of Professor Kamlian’s housing application with a housing developer in Cagayan de Oro, the warrantless arrests of Muslims suspected of being terrorists, and the trumped up charges leveled against them by some unscrupulous members of the police.
“It will also be an opportunity to drum up support for the proposed bill penalizing discriminatory acts against Muslims and Lumads which I have filed in the present Congress “ he said.
The Office of Deputy Speaker for Mindanao, Representative Gerry Salapuddin, the House Committee on Muslim Affairs, House Committee on Civil, Political, and Human Rights, Philippine Alliance of Human Rights(PAHRA), and BILLAH ISLAM Community Organizing and Rural Development co-sponsored the said Summit. |
