As Muslims around the world observes Eid'l Fitr HATAMAN CALLS FOR END TO DISCRIMINATION A Muslim lawmaker called on international leaders Monday to work for genuine peace and a permanent halt on the increasing trend of discrimination, vilification, harassment and deprivation against Muslims worldwide. As the Muslim world observes Eid'l Fitr or the end of the holy month of Ramadan, Anak Mindanao Rep. Mujiv Hataman said that contrary to what is usually portrayed in the media, most Muslims are god-fearing persons.
"I am calling all world leaders to unite for peace and for the betterment of the great majority. The end of the holy month of Ramadan is an opportunity to appeal and call for understanding to cease the discrimination of Muslims. Like most people, Muslims are also God-fearing persons," Hataman said.
"Peace is not merely the absence of war and hatred but also the presence of cooperation, compassion and justice," the lawmaker said.
Hataman said people should be educated about Islam for them to appreciate the values Muslims hold dear.
He said Ramadan should be an occasion to stop the stereotyping of Muslims, because like other religions, Muslims also make the ultimate sacrifice to follow the doctrines of Allah.
"Fasting during Ramadan has many benefits. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God and self-control. Muslims think of it as a kind of tune-up for their spiritual lives. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites, a measure of ascendancy is given to one's spiritual life, which becomes a means of coming closer to God," Hataman said.
"Ramadan is a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur'an, giving charity, purifying one's behavior and doing good deeds," he said.
He said Ramadan teaches Muslims to feel the sufferings of the less fortunate.
"As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate and learning the appreciation of God's bounties," Hataman said.
In a privilege speech delivered in the House of Representatives last week, Hataman denounced the discrimination against Muslims such as the opposition of some sectors of the construction of a prayer room at Greenhills Shopping Center. |
