By Dan Mariano From the Manila Times Internet Edition Muslim Congressmen Mujiv Hataman of Anak Mindanao and Benasing Macarabon of Lanao del Sur are righteously and justifiably indignant over what they described as the slander on Islam committed by the actresses Ara Mina, Aubrey Miles and Ruffa Mae Quinto in a recent television program. “I condemn in the strongest possible terms the lack of respect and impertinence of the reality-based television game show Extra Challenge of GMA Channel 7 to the sanctity and holiness of our religion, Islam,” said Hataman.
Macarambon, meanwhile, described as an insult the actresses’ comedic treatment of the Muslim prayer Al-Fatiha, which is contained in the Qur’an. “We don’t deserve such kind of disrespect, spare our religion,” the Maranao lawmaker said. “If they want to be [funny], don’t place Islam in a bad light.”
Speaking for their Muslim constituency, the congressmen wondered how the episode managed to pass the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board.
Recall that the MTRCB recently sparked controversy when it required all TV current affairs programs to undergo screening before broadcast, which journalists condemned as an example of prior restraint on press freedom.
As far as many journalists are concerned, the MTRCB has been coming down hard on critics of the Arroyo administration. But on the more fundamental question of requiring respect for all religions, the board has evidently been quite lax. |
