Muslim trader cries ‘hulidap’ vs. WPD men

from the Manila Times Internet Edition

A Muslim trader cried hulidap against Manila policemen who demanded a P3-million bail for trumped-up charges.

At a meeting of Muslim leaders Sunday, Zainab Daud Bayantol alleged that she and her family were stopped in Quiapo by a group of policemen asserting they had information that they were carrying unlicensed firearms.

“They searched our car and when they didn’t find [weapons] they took us to the [community precinct] on Barbosa Street in Quiapo,” Zainab told The Manila Times.

She said the policemen couldn’t even agree on what to charge them with, but eventually settled to file a case of vagrancy.

Zainab identified one of the officers involved as Jojo Villanueva, a certain Baquirin and Senior Police Officer 3 Joseph. The officers supposedly demanded P3 million in bail, but lowered it to P100,000, which Zainab’s relatives agreed to pay.

Zainab alleged that the officers took the P53,000 dowry money she was carrying, a gold necklace and a ring of her daughter, and four cell phones.

One officer also took her ATM card and withdrew P3,000 from it, she added.

The Manila Times called Precinct 3 but was told by Senior Police Officer 2 Edwin Alarcio that there is no Baquirin and Senior Police Officer 3 Joseph assigned there. Alarcio confirmed, however, that Villanueva was with their mobile patrol unit.

Party-list Rep. Mujiv Hataman of Anak Mindanao assured the victims that his office will investigate the case, which he said was not the first case of hulidap, slang for being arrested on trumped-up charges.
