HR01315
HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 1315

Date Filed: July 31, 2006

Introduced by HON. MUJIV S. HATAMAN

RESOLUTION EXPRESSING THE SENSE OF THE HOUSE ON THE ISRAELI INCURSION OF LEBANON AND GAZA STRIP AND JOINS INTERNATIONAL AND REGIONAL ORGANIZATIONS HEADED BY THE UNITED NATIONS (UN), EUROPEAN UNION (EU), ASSOCIATION OF SOUTHEAST ASIAN NATIONS (ASEAN), ORGANIZATION OF ISLAMIC CONFERENCE (OIC), AND THE ARAB LEAGUE IN EXHAUSTING ALL PEACEFUL AND DIPLOMATIC MEANS TO END THE WAR AND/OR IMMEDIATE CALL FOR CEASEFIRE

WHEREAS, the recent outbreak of the rekindled feud between Lebanon and Israel is causing more tensions to a very volatile Middle East crisis already occurring in Palestine, Iraq, Iran and Syria;

WHEREAS, the bombings started following the capture of two Israeli soldiers by Hezbollah almost a month ago prompting the Israeli government to launch on July 12 a military offensive to recover the two soldiers and hunt the Hezbollah fighters;

WHEREAS, since the spark of the conflict, substantial numbers of innocent civilian casualties on both sides were documented as a result of the indiscriminate shelling and air attacks, to include direct targeting and destroying the base of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) last June 25, killing four of its members and several others; WHEREAS, part of Israeli’s retaliation was the bombing of Lebanon which includes Beirut that killed 363 people as of July 24, 320 of whom were innocent civilians representing women and children. The collateral damage against innocent civilians will increase through the continued indiscriminate shelling and air attacks in Lebanon, the latest of which caused the killing of atleast 60 civilians, 37 of them are children;

WHEREAS, the heavy price of this conflict does not benefit anyone except those who are providing and selling military hardware;

WHEREAS, regrettably, the factual motive of the unprovoked attack by the Zionist State of Israel against the peaceful nation of Lebanon and the Palestinian people of Gaza has become evident invasion instead of self-defense;

WHEREAS, that an active participation of all civilized and peace-loving nations to join Muslims in the whole world would help pressure Israel to stop its attacks in Lebanon and help support the stand of United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan for the immediate declaration of a ceasefire;

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, that the House of Representatives expresses its sense for the Israeli incursion of Lebanon and Gaza Strip and joins the International and Regional organizations headed by the United Nations (UN), European Union (EU), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC), and the Arab League in exhausting all peaceful and diplomatic means to end the war and/or the immediate call for ceasefire.

Adopted.

REP. MUJIV S. HATAMAN
