A lawmaker from Ilocos Norte yesterday warned President Arroyo that cheating in the 2007 elec-tions could result in a civil war.
Ilocos Norte Rep. Imee Marcos advised Mrs. Arroyo and her allies not to try rigging the vote in the 2007 elections in their favor as this could trigger widespread violence and subsequently civil war.
“I fear massive hostilities if there will be anomalies in the 2007 elections. If we have (demonstrations) and rallies, there’s a greater possibility that civil war will spark in our country,” Marcos said after watching Mrs. Arroyo at the Quirino Grandstand during the 108th Independence Day celebration.
Senate leaders, for their part, also warned the pub-lic against a creeping militarization, saying the Filipino people must be extra-vigilant and take a definitive stand in opposing the repressive policies of the Arroyo administration.
This was the message aired by Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel Jr. and Majority Leader Francis Pangilinan on the anniversary of the country’s independence.
Reports on the arrest, alleged illegal detention and supposed torture of five leaders of support group of detained President Estrada the rash of killings of militants and crusading journalists and continuing enforcement of the gag order by Malacañang on Executive department officials in congressional inquiries are clearly a manifestation of a creeping militarization under the present administration, Pimentel said.
“Today, more than ever, we need to recall and celebrate the fundamental values our heroes died for: freedom, democracy, human rights. We must protect our country from creeping militarization,” he stressed.
Marcos said the Filipino electorate can no longer take a President who has not cleared her name on charges of massive electoral fraud.
“The situation is very different now. There are dozens of irregularities in government and charges of corruption against GMA that until now have not been answered. If the 2007 polls continue to be a sham, then violence is inevitable,” Marcos said.
Marcos maintained that one of the antidotes to poll fraud in the overhaul of the Commission on Elections, and a fair and non-partisan Philippine National Police and Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Opposition solons in the House of Representatives including Agusan del Sur Rep. Rodolfo Plaza, Mujiv Hataman of Anak Mindanao partylist, Rene Magtubo of Partido ng Manggagawa, and Laguna Rep. Benjamin Agarao Jr., in separate statements, said Mrs. Arroyo had failed to fully disclose and account for her acts during the 2004 elections.
According Hataman and Plaza, Mrs. Arroyo has failed to meet the people’s demands for full disclosure and accountability.
“President Arroyo owes it to the Filipino people to reveal the extent of her acts, her husband’s role and those of their lieutenants during the last election,” Plaza said.
“The failure to fully account for her acts and the delay of her admission are impropriety on her part which demolished any claim of moral ascendancy to lead this country,” Hataman added.
Hataman said that Mrs. Arroyo’s admission that she had talked to a poll official does not mean that she is cleared of her wrongdoing.
“Mrs. Arroyo’s lies and apologies are something that the people can never stomach and can’t fill their empty stomach either,” Magtubo said.
“The president’s admission that she talked to a Comelec official is obvious proof that they conspired to influence the result of the elections to her advantage, and is undeniably a manifestation that she violated the rule of law, betrayed public trust and assaulted moral values.”
In his speech, delivered at the Pinaglaban Shrine in San Juan, Metro Manila, Pimentel said the people should act and take a stand in opposing the repressive policies imposed by a government that seeks to put up a façade of stability amid persistent doubts over its legitimacy.
“Even today, our liberties are being threatened by the repressive acts of people in power who have shown disregard for the rule of law and constitutional process,” he said.
The same was the message sent by Pangilinan who agreed with the observations of the minority leader, saying that indeed, there have been too many threats to the country’s democracy.
“There is still much to be grateful for, but we have to remain vigilant nonetheless,” he said.
“It is high time that as we celebrate again our independence, we fervently pray that we be able to celebrate a restored faith in our capacity and ability to overcome any crisis that we may face. For as long as our country’s citizens refuse to take action toward reforms, then we will never be free from the shackles of extreme want, apathy, and despair, that have oppressed our people for generations.
“As we celebrate another year of independence, may the Filipino people be finally truly free, so that our country may have the chance to realize the endless possibilities of freedom and equality, which are just within our reach,” said Pangilinan.
