Muslims picket Israel Embassy to protest war

from the Manila Times Internet Edition

By Riza Barghout, Reporter

FILIPINO Muslims on Wednesday rallied at the Israel Embassy in Makati City to call for an end to Israeli attacks on Lebanon.

They said that the strafing by Israeli warplanes of Qana, resulting in the death of 56 people, mostly women and children, on July 30, was the second “massacre” to strike the town.

The demonstrators said the first tragedy occurred on April 18, 1996, when Israeli artillery struck a compound occupied by United Nations peacekeepers from Fiji, killing 106 civilians and injuring 116 others. Four UN soldiers were also injured.

Several Lebanese families had sought refuge in the compound to escape the fighting.

The protest was organized and led by the Anak Mindanao party-list, Bangsamoro People’s Solidarity, Moro Human Rights Center and other Filipino Islamic groups.

Carrying banners and pictures of beheaded children and other Lebanese war victims, the protesters demanded justice for their Muslim brethren.

“We demand justice for those who can no longer demand it. We demand retribution,” they said in a press statement.

The group also called on the United Nations to stand firm against the Israelis, whom they accused of being the “real” terrorists.

On Tuesday, Filipino Muslim women will picket the Israel Embassy.
